City Stages 2009: Birmingham Children's
Choir Review
Posted by Phillip Ratliff -- For The Birmingham News June 20, 2009 3:02
PM
Birmingham Children's Choir, 2:45 p.m. June 20, Music Oasis, City Stages,
Birmingham, Alabama
Performing mid-afternoon on the Music Oasis stage was the Birmingham
Children's Choir, which in its most comprehensive form is actually three
choirs -- a girls' choir grades 6 and up, an intermediate girls' choir and a
mixed choir for early grade-schoolers. For their concert at City Stages, BCC
brought their oldest group to the Music Oasis, the Una Voce Choir, led by
BCC Artistic Director Amanda Klimko.
The BCC Una Voce Choir specializes in the simple and sublime, which, at the
Music Oasis concert, broke down to two key components -- singing as near
perfectly in tune as humans can, and focusing on a beautifully nuanced
British style of vocal production. Una Voce's diction was indeed at times
straight out of Westminster Cathedral; their repertoire choices were
well-matched to their strengths. Klimko and her young singers filled their
concert with winsomely bittersweet moments that made all the more beautiful
by Advent's gorgeous acoustics.
